Model Construction
The hull of my model was constructed in the usual form of plank on frame using 1/8in. balsa for the frames, and 3/16 in balsa sheet for planking. The completed framework was filled and sanded and painted until a good gloss finish was obtained. This forms the plug for making a fibre glass mould and subsequently a hull in fibre glass.
ONE of the most prominent names in British shipping today is that of Blue Star Line, part of the big Vestey Group which has wide interests in shipping, cold storage, and other aspects of commerce.
As a break in my modelling of Clyde steamers, I chanced on a drawing of a new concept in refrigerated cargo liners being built for the Blue Star Line of London There were five vessels built for this company in 1975, four of which were constructed by Smiths Docks Ltd, at their South Bank-on-Tees yard." These ships were to be about .9,700 gross tons, about 510ft long, beam approximately 70ft, with a capacity of 475,000 cubic feet and speed of over 20 knots. They were 'fitted out for every type of refrigerated cargo that could be carried.
