DEVELOPED AND BUILT BY LOU JEFFERYS
(FROM AN ORIGINAL DESIGN BY VIC SMEED)
THIS 20in. model is a simple and relatively inexpensive boat intended for electric drive and can be controlled by a single, 1+1 or two-channel radio, which makes it ideal for beginners and younger enthusiasts.
The original hull design was published in Radio Control Models and Electronics, July 1963, and was then presented as possibly the cheapest diesel boat one could make. Fitted with a lice D.C. Sabre, a most gratifying turn of speed was achieved. At that time, it was of course, impossible to accommodate enough battery capacity for anything but a relatively sluggish performance when comparing electric with i.c. power. The advent of nickel-cadmium high-power cells now allows an excellent performance to be obtained, however.
Construction Notes
Hull – This model is built mainly of balsa and requires the following materials: Two sheets -1/8in. x 4in. and two sheets 1/4. x 4in., also some 1/16in. and1/32-in. ply and some odd strips of spruce for coaming, gunwale and spray strips, etc. The rudder can be made from brass sheet or a commercial unit adapted.
