THE Frederick Spashett is one of a number of small vessels, 80ft. between perpendiculars by 20ft. 6in. moulded breadth and 9ft. 9in. moulded depth, built in the late forties/early fifties. Frederick Spashett was actually constructed in 1949 by Richards Ironworks Ltd., Lowestoft Yard No. 388, and was the first of what was to become a very successful class of drifter/trawler. She was built for Small and Co. (Lowestoft) Ltd., one of the major fishing boat owners at that time.
Powered by a 231 BHP engine, she had an uneventful career as a drifter, and was transferred to the Trier Fishing Co. Ltd., Lowestoft, one of the companies within the Small and Co. group, during the fifties. This was a regular practice by trawler owners, some of which had a number of 'one ship companies' under one group.
In all, the Frederick Spashett spent 16 years operating from Lowestoft and other British ports during the various herring seasons,
