ON September 29th, 1952, an attempt was made to regain the World's Water Speed Record for Britain. The record was, at that time, held by an American, Stanley Sayers, With his boat Slo‑Mo‑Shun IV at a speed of 178.97 m.p.h. The boat which was to make The attempt for Britain was the Crusader, a hydroplane 31 feet in length, weighing 2.9 tons and powered by a De Havilland "Ghost" jet engine capable of giving 4,400 lb. thrust. The scene was Loch Ness and the pilot John Cobb, already holder of the World's Land Speed
Record. That day ended with disaster when the Crusader broke up after completing a timed run at 206.89 m.p.h., the fastest speed ever achieved on water at that date.
