  IN THE heyday of electric railways, double tab motor flat cars were a common sight on many city and interurban lines, doing both revenue service and company chores. When considered in their basic form, they consisted of two control cabs mounted on the ends of a motorized flat car, but since some of these cars were built by manufacturers and others obviously assembled from old ma­terials in the railway shops, there were many variations from the basic type, On some cars, the cabs were made to full deck width, thus limiting the length of loads carried to the distance between the cabs. Others, however, had narrow cabs so that long deck loads such as rails or poles could he placed along the sides of the cabs and project outward beyond till car ends if necessary. A compromise arrangement was used on the Portland Rail­road far shown on the accompanying photograph. In this case a wide cab was mounted on a narrow spacer section, so that the rails could be placed along both car edges passing under the cab most of the double cab cars carried trolley poles mounted on the cab roof's, and characteristically, the poles were bent inboard so that one mall on the deck could adjust either one handily when switching back and forth,
