Engine .15
By Larry Grogan
The "A" Jewel was built before the change of rules, and was originally powered with a .19 engine. Three weeks before the '59 Nats, we decided to fly "A" speed, and modified the "A" Jewel for a .15 engine. When we got to the '59 Nats in California, we ran the engine to get it loosened up the night before "A" speed day. On the first attempt, the engine was set too lean and we did not get a clocking, but on the second, it was set rich on the ground and once in the air it peaked in and went on to the winning speed in Senior of 118.06 m.p.h.
If you want a fast, smooth flying speed model, this is the plane for you.To begin construction you will need the following materials: two pieces of basswood as specified, one for the wing, the other for the crutch; one balsa block for the cowling; 1/8" plywood for the tail and fuselage top; and a cast aluminum speed pan.
