American Record Contender
By R. B. CAMPBELL
A MONGST the Land Speed Record Contenders on the Bonneville Salt Flats was a car that was an obvious prototype for a Jetex model. It was "THE FLYING CADUCEUS", a car built around a General Electric J.47 jet engine and it was propelled by jet thrust alone, there was no drive through the wheels. The car reached speeds of around 300 m.p.h. when the driver (pilot?) found that it was becoming difficult to keep on a straight line and wisely slowed down. Like jet aircraft this car had a braking parachute, stowed in the fairing of the tail, to supplement its more normal wheel brakes.
