The modern small trawlers carry at least one gas fired portable boiler on the back deck, and this combined with an electric shell fish riddle, fish box, nets, hoses, etc., was just what I was looking for. What happens is that the shell fish are netted, dumped into one of the sealed fish ponds, the nets are then reshot, the catch is shovelled onto the top riddle of the machine, the electric motor is switched on and the riddle thrashes up and down like a wild thing. The small shell fish, stones, etc., fall through the riddle onto the aluminium tray underneath where they slide down and fall off the end into the fish pond and are shovelled and washed with the hose back overboard through the freeing way in the hull side.
The shellfish on the riddle work their way down towards the lower end of the riddle, and again any object that is not wanted is sorted by hand and thrown overboard. The fish boiler is filled with sea water, brought to the boil, the shellfish are then dropped into the boiler, and after boiling the internal cage is removed and the shellfish are put into paper-lined fish boxes. They are then ready for unloading and dispatching for market as soon as the trawler can land her catch.
