Construction
Hull construction is very simple. Start by cutting the deck and bulkheads from a 4 in. sheet of 3/32 in. balsa. The hull bottom halves can be cut from a 2 in. wide sheet of soft 3/8 in. balsa. Chamfer the centre edge as shown in the cross-section and cut out the slot for the propeller assembly. Having cut around the hatch line, assemble the deck, bulkheads and hull bottom, leaving the aft end of the latter until last
THESE boats were designed to locate and destroy enemy submarines in harbour approaches, estuaries and offshore waters. With an overall length of 117 ft. and three diesel motors for power, their top speed is 18 knots. The armament consists of a 40 mm. Bofors A.A. gun, depth charges, and a squid.
The model, based on photos of H.M.S. lckford, is to a scale of 6 ft. - 1 in. This scale is convenient in 00 gauge figures and certain other railway fittings can be used. For example, the laddering on the mainmast can be obtained at many model railway shops in 9 in. lengths. Other fittings such as the anchor, davits, and bollards can be readily purchased.
