From the time of her completion by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company in 1920 to the year 1931, the Cayo Mambi spent most of her time in the banana and sugar trade between New York, Cuba and Jamaica in the British West Indies. She was one of several vessels owned by the Atlantic Fruit and Sugar Company, and was carried as a separate corporation, under the title of the Cayo Mambi Steamship Corporation.
