J or JAVELIN-Class Destroyer ordered from John Brown at Clydebank on 25th March 1937 under the 1936 Build Programme and laid down on 11th October 1937. The ship was to have been named KASHMIR but this was changed to JAVELIN before launch on 21st December 1938 as the 2nd RN ship to carry the name, first used in 1913. Build was completed on 10th June 1939 and she commissioned for service in the 7th Destroyer Flotilla, Home Fleet. After a a WARSHIP WEEK National Savings campaign in November 1941 this ship was adopted by the civil community of Stoke-on-Trent. Her Tender cost, excluding that of Admiralty supplied equipment such as weapons and radio was £391,570.
