There has been a fair amount of conjecture exactly as to the origins of this term which was given to the type of steel hulled fishing vessel. One theory is that one of these boats was launched on the same day that Russia put its Sputnik satellite into orbit, but others have it that it was when one of the Aberdeen Fish Market staff compared the new boats to the older steam trawlers. It would seem the term was first used around 1958, perhaps also because of the speed of one of the new trawlers.
